Allied was a radio parts retailer based out of Chicago for over 50 years until the evil beast, known as "Rat Shack" swallowed them up around 1972. Their private label items (Allied, Knight, Knight-Kit, etc.) were made for them by outside vendors.
the Allied 495 as being a quality receiver for the price at the time. I recently bought a Realistic STA-120B receiver because it was one of my favorites from the good old days at Radio Shaft. It works great, even better than I remembered it. The point is, I was looking through fleabay in case there might be another one listed. It would make more than an excellent garage receiver. The tuner section is excellent and the amplifier sounds very good too. Anyway, I came across another decent old receiver that might be worth looking at. http://cgi.ebay.com/Realistic-Stereo-Receiver-Vintage_W0QQitemZ9719602059QQcategoryZ3279QQrdZ1QQ cmdZViewItem . Again I remember it as being a decent receiver and very good for the price. Not that there isn't a boatload of good receivers on fleabay but the STA-120B and the STA-50 are two that stick in my mind as being unusually good for the price, right there with the Allied 495.
